Well folks, we are in for a treat this weekend. We've been watching meteors fly by all week but Southern California skywatchers can look forward to several meteor showers, including the Perseids and Alpha Capricornids as they combine to deliver maximum shooting star satisfaction. Perseids: This is one of the most popular meteor showers, occurring annually from July 17 to August 24, with a peak around August 11-12. This Sunday into early The Perseids are known for their bright meteors and can produce up to 100 meteors per hour at their peak, given ideal conditions. Viewing is best after midnight from a dark location away from city lights​ (TimeandDate)​ (NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)). Alpha Capricornids: This meteor shower runs from July 3 to August 15 and peaks around July 30. While the Alpha Capricornids typically produce fewer meteors than the Perseids, they are known for their bright fireballs that can be quite spectacular​ (TimeandDate). Additionally, there are minor showers like the Kappa Cygnids, which occur from August 3 to August 25, peaking around August 17-18. This shower is less intense but can still be a pleasant sight for avid stargazers. The Perseids, being the highlight of August, are best viewed when the radiant point in the constellation Perseus is high in the sky. In April, Southern California skywatchers can enjoy several celestial events: The Great North American Eclipse: Southern California residents will have a 40% view of the April 8th eclipse. This also coincides with the April New Moon which is perfect for stargazing. Lyrid Meteor Shower: Peaking around April 22nd, the Lyrids are known for their bright meteors, with up to 20 meteors per hour visible under ideal conditions. Pink Supermoon: On April 16th, the full moon coincides with its closest approach to Earth, appearing larger and brighter than usual. While not a rare event, it's a stunning sight to behold. The Eta Aquariids Meteor Shower: Although the peak occurs in early May, you may catch some early meteors from this shower towards the end of April. It's known for its fast and often bright meteors. Stargazing: April nights offer excellent opportunities for stargazing due to clearer skies and warmer temperatures. Look out for constellations like Orion, Taurus, and Leo, as well as bright planets like Venus and Mars.

The climate in Wonder Valley swings wildly from one extreme to the next. From freezing nights to scorching days, windstorms, sandstorms, dust devils, torrential rain and even the rare blanket of snow. We personally enjoy them all, but it takes a toll on the domes especially the clear vinyl windows. This summer we plan on replacing all the windows and skylights so our guests can enjoy the beautiful view.
